True beauty – The Dolomites in South Tyrol
Because of their unique beauty, the Dolomites were declared World Natural Heritage by the UNESCO in 2009. The peeks of the Dolomites, which were once covered by the sea, now reach, like the world-famous Tre Cime, more than 3,000 m into the sky and are admired by uncountable alpinists every year. Jagged edges, bizarre summits and picturesque, unspoiled nature are just some of their special features.
As scientists found out in 1788, the majestic rocks of the Dolomites consist of fossilized corals and magnesian limestone. In no time they got popular, the legend of the Dolomites famous and postcards of the Tre Cime in South Tyrol went around the world. Furthermore, the well-known Luis Trenker from Val Gardena made the Dolomites famous in his mountain films.
The UNESCO World Natural Heritage of the Dolomites includes about 350 three-thousanders, seven nature parks and a national park and is therefore a highlight for hikers, cyclists and also for those who love extreme sports.
